Reasons Your Car Could Get Towed Without Your Authorization

reasons-your-car-could-get-towed-without-your-authorizationIf your car was towed without your permission, you probably are wondering what could have caused the unexpected towing.  Here are the common reasons why your car could get towed without your approval:

1. Illegal Parking

Vehicles parked in tow-away places, in front of fire hydrants, in handicapped parking zones or ambulance parking spots without the proper permit can be legally towed without your authorization. Some major cities are struggling to provide ample parking places for their residents. Individuals who live in big cities like San Francisco, Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles know all too well what a time-consuming and difficult task it is to search and find a parking spot.

2. Expired Registration

Don’t wait for the registration of your vehicle to expire or you could be visiting the local impound station soon. When police officers, DMV, or other local authorities find out that you have an expired car registration, they may have the right to tow your car without your permission. You may be expected to provide a proof of renewal registration before you can retrieve your car.

3. Obstructing Walkway Or Road

If your car is parked in such a way that it blocks a business or driveway entrance and you can’t find your car when you get to the parking spot, then you can bet that your car was towed as a result of obstructing the walkway. Therefore, ensure to check that your car isn’t disrupting any access points or entrance, or else you could end up paying fines for the obstruction.

4. Unlicensed Driver

If you were stopped by the police and they found that your driving license has expired or doesn’t even exist, they are likely to call a tow truck to the scene. It is against the law to drive without a valid license and even an expired license doesn’t count. The officer may still decide to tow your car even if you have a relative or friend in the car with a valid license.

5. Disabled Car

If you were pulled over by the police and they observe that your car isn’t in a safe driving condition, then you could have your car being towed on the spot. Also, if your car breaks down on the walkway or road, it may get towed if you leave it for any length of time without leaving a notice.
