4 Things to Consider Doing When You See a Stranded Motorist That Needs Help

4-things-to-consider-doing-when-you-see-a-stranded-motorist-that-needs-helpGetting stranded on the road can happen to anyone. No matter how good the vehicle is, there are still chances that it might act up or break down. So, let’s say you are driving somewhere and suddenly you see a motorist stranded on the roadside. Now there are many things you can do in such a situation if you are willing to help the person.

Following are 4 things to consider doing when you see a stranded motorist that needs help:

1. Help the driver stay calm

People get panic-stricken or anxious when they get stranded. So the first thing you should do is help the driver keep their calm because getting anxious would not help anyone, and it may even prove to be dangerous to them as well as other people.  Do your best to help the driver think clearly, and to take only the actions that will be helpful in that scenario.

2. Call a towing company

Calling a towing company is a great idea in such a situation because they would provide help in a matter of minutes and either fix the problem or tow the vehicle away. Most good towing companies have an experienced crew that is able to assess the problem and if its fixable on the road, they can fix it there instead of bringing the vehicle back to a repair shop.  So calling a towing company would be very beneficial as it will save everyone’s time and move the car safely to where it is needed to be.

3. Assess the situation and call relevant authorities

Many roadside emergencies do not always require the services of a towing company. There are cases where calling 911 is a better idea, for example in case someone ran into another car. Sometimes the accident only requires a police report if the damage is not enough to render the vehicle immobilized and both cars can still operate safely.  Even if no one seems to be injured after an accident, it is still very important to call the authorities. Many emergency road services are only a phone call away and help stranded motorists get out of various situations in no time. So, if you witness an accident or other roadside emergency, you can call for help on behalf of the person who is stranded.

4. Take appropriate steps in case people are injured

It would be a good idea to call 911 if someone is injured at the scene of an accident so that emergency personnel can come quickly and treat and transport the injured party. People often get shaken up after such emergencies and don’t know if they are actually hurt that bad. In such cases, make sure that the driver or other people involved in the accident are evaluated by a paramedic to ensure that they are not suffering from internal injuries or a concussion. And if there are children involved, then it is recommended that they get taken to a hospital to be thoroughly checked out.
